davidsuzukiA Hamilton high school has managed a major coup in getting David Suzuki to take its stage for a question-and-answer session after a film showing tonight.

Westdale Secondary School is inviting the public to a showing of a hot-off-the-shelf environmental documentary, the Suzuki appearance and book signings afterward.

Westdale science teacher Geoff Orton said he knew in advance Suzuki would be in the area on the weekend.

So three weeks ago, he wrote a letter inviting him.

He got a "yes" the next day.

Orton co-directs Westdale's Students Bridging Borders -- a group started in 2008 aimed at involving students in social justice and environmental issues.

The film, The Age Of Stupid, looks back from the year 2055 at "archive" footage from 2008 and asks why didn't people stop climate change when they could.

Westdale is holding the event to generate awareness about December climate change talks in Copenhagen.

The event is sponsored by TD Canada Trust, BullFrog Power and the city, which is providing hybrid transport for Suzuki.

Ticket holders are encouraged to arrive by walking, cycling or using public transit.
